WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF BEING PART OF A “REGULAR” MASONIC LODGE?
Freemasonry is, at its core, an initiatory experience. Its primary purpose is to provide initiation through the ritual, and, through an engaging collective, provide a brother with the needed support to continue his journey into light.
It provides a ‘worthy’ candidate with an experience that is meant to be transformative, an experience that opens his psyche to ‘see’ the world in a different way. Initiation into Freemasonry should be a life-altering experience.
For Freemasonry to achieve this objective, it must utilize Masonic bodies that are “Ancient, Regular, and Accepted” Grand Lodges recognized worldwide. This is because:
- The use of ancient and accepted rites of ritual that has been transmitted from time immemorial holds the key to the initiatory experience. These rituals must exclude novelty; alterations made by self-styled Masonic bodies that are subject to the whims and desires of self-serving individuals.
- The use of individual consciousness that extends to a global consciousness is also essential to the effectiveness of ritualistic ceremonies. According to Brother W. Kirk MacNulty, the Support of an engaging collective band of Brothers spread over the four corners of the world provides the candidate with “a powerful experience through which a Freemason can come to understand himself in ways which cannot be communicated by words.”
“As Freemasons, we have a unique chance, using symbols and allegory, to free ourselves from the limitations of scientific materialism. To own up to the otherness in ourselves, without complete knowledge of ourselves, is not possible.” Julian Rees
Freemasonry offers a brother the experience of an international family of Brothers where He is warmly received anywhere He goes. Even if the Brother never leaves the shores of his native land, one day, a son or a daughter does, and He will call on a Brother 8000km away and ask for assistance.
Today, Millennials talk about the importance of “experiencing life.” Living a meaningful, happy life is about creating, sharing and capturing memories earned through experiences that span the spectrum of life’s opportunities. For us to fully understand the teachings of Freemasonry, we cannot simply read about it, we need to experience it, and live-it. Living-it must be done in every sense of the word; be it in the ceremonies or in its global fellowship of like-minded Brothers that provide support to the journey.
While Freemasonry should be selective, it is meant to be an all-inclusive global organization. Not an organization that is limited to a few countries whose only common denominator is its masonic "irregularity." Being a Freemason in a Regularly recognized international body is essential to truly experiencing and living your masonic experience.
“Many are the candidates seeking initiation, but few are the perfected initiates.” Socrates
