«Stand to and abide by» | Freemasonry

It's important to think about the language that is commonly used in Freemasonry. Many Masonic ceremonies include the phrase "stand to and abide by." This phrase is usually found in reference to the constitution and edicts of the Grand Lodge, the bylaws of an individual lodge, or the landmarks of Freemasonry. On the surface, the two part phrase seems redundant. But, according to Mackey, the two parts build on each other. To "stand to" has a somewhat active meaning, and signifies to maintain and defend the laws; while "to abide by" is more passive in meaning, and signifies to submit to such laws.
